1899 Cremation Lecture by Sadakichi Hartmann Illustrated with Stereopticon Views at Berkeley Lyceum NY.

Hartmann’s involvement is telling. Called the King of the Bohemians in Greenwich Village, he introduced haiku to America (himself German and Japanese by birth) and ran with Walt Whitman, Ezra Pound and the predecessors to Surrealism. Alfred Stieglitz’s Camera Notes featured a regular column by Hartmann, one of the first to critique art photography in the United States. If Hartmann was the celebrity face then Fresh Pond was targeting the progressive and intellectual elite of New York City.
